Maintaining a clean washing machine ensures your clothes always come out fresh and spotless. Over time, washing machines can accumulate detergent residues, fabric softeners, mould, and mildew, leading to unpleasant odours and reduced efficiency.

To keep your machine running smoothly and your laundry smelling great, it's important to follow a regular cleaning routine. Here are some essential washing machine cleaning tips you can easily incorporate into your cleaning schedule.

1. Regular Drum Cleaning

One of the simplest ways to keep your washing machine clean is to run a cleaning cycle with an empty drum. Most modern washing machines come with a self-cleaning cycle, but if yours doesn't, you can achieve the same effect by running a hot water cycle with a cup of white vinegar.

Vinegar is a natural disinfectant that can help remove detergent buildup and kill bacteria and mould. Add half a cup of baking soda to the drum for an extra boost. This combination is effective at neutralizing odours and breaking down any residues.

2. Clean the Detergent Drawer

The detergent drawer is often overlooked, but it can harbour soap scum, mould, and mildew. Take out the drawer and give it a bath in warm water with soap. Use a toothbrush to get rid of any residue, especially in the nooks and crannies.

Before re-entering the machine, give it a good rinse and let it to air dry. Regular cleaning of the detergent drawer can prevent buildup and ensure that detergent flows smoothly into the drum.

3. Wipe Down the Door Seal

The door seal, also known as the gasket, can accumulate dirt, lint, and moisture, making it a breeding ground for mould and mildew. After each wash, wipe down the seal with a clean, dry cloth.

For a deeper clean, use a mixture of equal parts water and white vinegar to wipe the seal, followed by a dry cloth. This will help keep the seal clean and odor-free. Remember to leave the door slightly ajar after each wash to allow the seal to dry completely, preventing mould growth.

4. Clean the Filter

The filter in your washing machine catches lint, coins, and other debris. Over time, it can become clogged, reducing the efficiency of your machine. Consult your washing machine's manual to locate the filter and learn how to clean it.

Typically, you must remove the filter, rinse it under running water, and remove any trapped debris. This simple maintenance step can help prevent drainage issues and extend the life of your machine.

5. Use the Right Amount of Detergent

Too much detergent can lead to excessive suds and residue buildup inside the drum and hoses. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for detergent use, and consider using a high-efficiency (HE) detergent if you have an HE machine.

Overusing detergent affects your machine's performance and can make your clothes sticky or stiff.

6. Schedule Regular Deep Cleaning

While these DIY tips are practical for regular maintenance, it's also essential to periodically schedule a professional deep cleaning for your washing machine.

Professional deep cleaning services can provide a more thorough cleaning service that reaches areas difficult to access with regular cleaning methods. These services can help remove built-up grime, sanitize your machine, and ensure it operates efficiently.

7. Maintain a Clean Laundry Area

Keeping the area around your washing machine clean is equally important. Dust, dirt, and lint can accumulate behind and under the machine, potentially affecting its performance.

Regularly vacuum or sweep the area and wipe down surfaces to prevent dust buildup. If you notice any leaks or standing water, address them promptly to avoid mould and mildew growth.
